Rules and expert systems

Beginner explanation

Classical AI includes approaches based on explicit rules, symbols, search and planning. A rule-based system follows statements such as “if this condition is true, consider that action.” It can be useful without a neural network.

Intermediate explanation

An expert system combines a knowledge base with an inference mechanism. Forward chaining starts from facts; backward chaining starts from a goal and asks which facts would support it. Rules need maintenance and explicit handling of unknown information.

Advanced explanation

Rule priority and conflict resolution affect results. A missing fact is not generally the same as a false fact; the chosen closed-world or open-world assumptions must be explicit. Traceable rule execution helps explain results but does not prove the rules are correct.

PUT IT IN CONTEXT

A worked example

A fictional helpdesk rule says: if the printer has power and the queue is paused, suggest resuming the queue. If power status is unknown, the system should request that fact rather than assume a failed power supply.

TRY IT YOURSELF

Practice the idea

Write two rules for sorting fictional support tickets, then identify a case in which both rules might match.

Reveal the answer guide

Example: “If billing is mentioned, route to billing”; “If login failure is mentioned, route to account support.” A ticket about being unable to log in to pay matches both, so define a priority or a human triage path.

Go further: advanced challenge

Show how treating every missing fact as false could produce an incorrect diagnosis. Specify an unknown state in the rule representation.

An open-ended discussion task. Explain your assumptions and evidence; there may be more than one defensible answer.
