Beginner explanation

A useful AI system can combine learned models with explicit rules. A model might interpret a message while rules check whether a proposed action is allowed. These approaches can complement each other rather than replace one another.

Intermediate explanation

Use a learned component where language or perception is uncertain, and deterministic checks for well-defined requirements. Validate structured outputs before applying rules. Keep unknown and low-confidence interpretations visible instead of forcing a category.

Advanced explanation

A hybrid pipeline inherits failure modes from both representations and interfaces. A rule checker can verify only the facts and constraints it receives; if a model extracts the wrong amount, syntactically valid downstream checks may still authorize the wrong action.

A worked example

A model extracts a fictional purchase request for $120. A rule requires approval above $100. If the model mistakenly extracts $12, the rule alone will not catch it. Cross-checking the source amount is necessary before any purchase action.
