Beginner explanation

A model can perform well on familiar examples and fail on new ones. Evaluation should include realistic differences in lighting, wording or population. A system should have a way to say it cannot provide a reliable answer.

Intermediate explanation

Distribution shift occurs when deployment data differs from evaluation data. Monitor performance by relevant groups and conditions, not only the overall average. A confidence score can be poorly calibrated: high confidence does not guarantee correctness.

Advanced explanation

Separate calibration, discrimination and robustness. Calibration compares predicted probabilities with empirical frequencies; it can degrade under shift. Use held-out stress sets and explicit abstention criteria, then assess the tradeoff between coverage and error.

A worked example

A fictional package detector works on bright warehouse photos but misses dark parcels at dusk. A random split from the same daytime camera may conceal this failure. A separate dusk test exposes the operational limitation.
