Beginner explanation
Reinforcement learning trains a decision-making policy through rewards from interaction. Actions can affect later situations, so an immediate reward may conflict with a better long-term outcome. Practice in simulations rather than experiment on people or critical systems.
Intermediate explanation
An agent observes a state or observation, takes an action and receives feedback. The policy chooses actions; the reward defines the training signal. Exploration tries alternatives, while exploitation uses currently favored actions. Poor reward design can encourage unwanted behavior.
Advanced explanation
In a Markov decision process, expected discounted return sums future rewards using a discount factor. Value functions estimate return, not moral value. Partial observability, unsafe exploration and simulator mismatch complicate deployment beyond simplified environments.
PUT IT IN CONTEXT
A worked example
A fictional warehouse simulation rewards fast delivery but ignores collisions. A learned policy may take dangerous shortcuts. Adding a collision cost helps express a preference but does not by itself enforce a hard safety constraint.
TRY IT YOURSELF
Practice the idea
With rewards 2 now and 4 next step and discount factor 0.5, calculate the two-step discounted return. Name one missing operational constraint.
Reveal the answer guide
Return = 2 + 0.5×4 = 4. A collision prohibition or restricted zone may need explicit enforcement rather than relying only on a reward penalty.
Go further: advanced challenge
Explain how reward hacking differs from an implementation bug and design a test that reveals an unintended high-reward behavior.
An open-ended discussion task. Explain your assumptions and evidence; there may be more than one defensible answer.
