Beginner explanation

Generative AI produces text, images, audio or other content using patterns learned from data. Its output can be useful and original in form without being factually correct. Fluent wording is not evidence that a claim was checked.

Intermediate explanation

A language model predicts token distributions conditioned on context and generates a sequence from them. Tokens can be words, word pieces or punctuation. Training adjusts parameters; ordinary use usually generates output without updating those parameters.

Advanced explanation

Autoregressive language models factor sequence probability into conditional next-token probabilities. Sampling choices affect variation but do not certify truth. Image generation may use diffusion or other architectures; not every generative system is a next-token language model.

A worked example

Ask for a fictional café announcement. The model can produce a polished draft, but any opening date or discount it invents must be replaced with approved facts. The quality of the writing and the accuracy of its claims are separate checks.
